ONTARIO RED GUNNING FOR FIFTH-STRAIGHT U18 CHAMPIONSHIP NAPANEE, ON – The drive for five is still alive for Team Ontario Red. Ontario Red has a chance to win its fifth-straight gold medal game at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship after beating Manitoba 5-2 on Saturday night at the Strathcona Paper Centre. Manitoba got the scoring started early, as Danica Knockaert (Winnipeg, MB/St. Vital Victorias) found the back of the net just 19 seconds into the game. Ontario Red got a pair of goals early in the first period, as Jenna McParland (Schreiber, ON/Toronto Aeros, PWHL) and Casandra Langan (Chatham, ON/London Devilettes, PWHL) scored in the first 3:35 of the game. In the second, Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON/Mississauga Chiefs, PWHL) and Heather Hughes (Stouffville, ON/Toronto Aeros, PWHL) scored to give Ontario Red a 4-1 lead going into the third. Christine Bestland (Brunkild, MB/Balmoral Hall Blazers) scored Manitoba’s final goal 7:23 into the third. Langan added her second of the game into an empty net with one second left. Ontario Red will face Quebec in the gold medal final for the seventh-straight time. The teams have met in every gold medal game of the National Women’s Under-18 Championship since the tournament’s inception in 1993. |
