QUICK START LEADS BUFFALOES PAST TITANS Jordan Kanygin scored once and added three assists as the Buffaloes stormed out to a 4-0 first-period lead on their way to a 5-1 win over the Ottawa Valley Titans on Wednesday night. Calgary struck for four goals on 16 shots in a span of 8:26, capped off by Kanygin’s snap shot over the glove of Ottawa Valley goaltender Alex Huard, who didn’t make it past the first period – he was replaced by Justin Gilbert to begin the second. Brody Sutter, Jake Hayes and player of the game Adam Thompson scored for the Buffaloes ahead of Kanygin, while Sutter added his second of the game late in the middle frame to round out the scoring. Devin Cobbold scored the lone goal for the Titans, who are still searching for their first win and face the unbeaten Winnipeg Thrashers on Thursday night (7:30 p.m. ET). The Buffaloes, who entered Wednesday night’s game with the fifth-best powerplay in the tournament – operating at just 18 per cent (2-for-11) – scored three times in 12 chances while killing off all five of Ottawa Valley’s opportunities with the man advantage, improving their tournament-best penalty killing to 94 per cent (16-of-17). Brent Bisdee took home player of the game honours for the Titans, who have taken a tournament-worst 32 minor penalties through three games. The Buffaloes look to take another step towards a semi-final berth and go for win number two when they take on the Quebec champions from Séminaire Saint-François on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET. |
