CANADA GETS DECISIVE WIN OVER SWITZERLAND
Canada came close to getting on the board at 1:30 of the opening frame as Derek Meech’s slapshot beat Swiss goaltender Daniel Manzato but found the right post. And the Swiss gained from energy from their good fortune. Canada carried the play early on, but it was Switzerland who scored first. Lukas Grauwiler cashed in on Switzerland’s first shot on net, at 4:43, beating Marc-André Fleury with a wrist shot.
Canadian pressure on a powerplay led to the Swiss goaltender throwing the stick which means, in international hockey, a penalty shot. Michael Richards was awarded the penalty shot at 8:13, and found room between Manzato’s pads for Canada’s first penalty shot goal since December 1999, when Jamie Lundmark scored against Slovakia. Two minutes later, Canada took the lead as Braydon Coburn left the point and one-timed Jeff Carter’s centering pass past Manzato at 10:46. Canada had taken the lead 2-1.
Canada’s powerplay struck again at 16:24, as Ryan Getzlaf pounced on a loose puck and chipped it over Manzato.
Getzlaf was back with a second goal at 3:35 of the second period, putting a Brent Burns pass into a wide open net, and Canada had a 4-1 lead. Anthony Stewart, with two, and Sidney Crosby closed out the scoring for Canada while Switzerland scored once in the third to make the final 7-2 Canada.
Canada is back at it on Monday, December 29th as they take on Ukraine, winless so far in the 2004 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
