2010 Esso Cup

Notre Dame Hounds  4 -  Moncton Rockets  3

HOUNDS HAVE COMEBACK OF THE TOURNAMENT IN OVERTIME

REGINA, Sask. – The Moncton Rockets were hot early in their game Tuesday against the first place Notre Dame Hounds but had sizzled by the third period, with the team from the West pulling off the comeback of the tournament thus far to beat the Atlantic representatives 4-3 in overtime.

Becky Bowes (Shediac, N.B.) kicked off Moncton’s impressive lead just over a minute into the first, sliding it by a surprised Tamber Tisdale (Red Deer. Alta.) with help from Janik Robichaud (Dieppe, N.B.). That quick goal must have boosted the confidence of Bowes, Robichaud and the rest of the Rockets, as the two forwards combined again for Moncton’s second goal, with an assist also going to Katherine Richard (Dieppe, N.B.).

But the Hounds didn’t let a two goal deficit deter them going into the second, and with dogged determination began their comeback on a power play of their own at 5:20 in the second, when Brienna Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) finally put one in the opposition’s net for Notre Dame.

Schyler Campbell (Rexton, N.B.) snagged another for Moncton, however, with the Rockets regaining their two-goal lead going into the third. But the Hounds weren’t about to let that last, with Brooke Wilgosh (Regina, Sask.) and Meagan Vestby (Swan River, Man.) quickly tying it up at three-apiece.

An injury late in the game put a stop on play for awhile, but gave Notre Dame the opportunity to break the tie with a penalty shot. Olivia Howe (Moose Jaw, Sask.) wasn’t able to capitalize on that chance, instead missing the net when she tried to deke out Meagan Blacquiere (Moncton, N.B.), which in turn sent the game into a fourth period.

The Hounds didn’t let overtime last long, however, with Vestby scoring her second of the game at 1:04 on an assist from Courtenay Jacklin (Regina, Sask.) to finish off the comeback at 4-3 and add another two points to Notre Dame’s standings.  The Rockets also gain a point in the standings for taking the game into overtime.

Gillanders was named Player of the Game for the Hounds, while the Rocket who stood out most on the ice Tuesday was Bowes, one of the primary players responsible for Moncton’s early lead.
