TSOGKAS SCORES GOLDEN GOAL TO SEND REPS TO FINAL

LÉVIS, QUE. – It might not rival a trip to the Stanley Cup Final for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the Mississauga Reps did their best to throw hockey fans in Toronto into a frenzy on Saturday night.

Andreas Tsogkas (Toronto, Ont.) scored 5:59 into the second overtime period to give Mississauga a shocking 4-3 win over the Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard in semifinal action at the 2010 TELUS Cup. The golden goal put Mississauga into Sunday’s final, where the Reps will meet the Notre Dame Hounds.

Mississauga overcame a 3-2 third-period deficit on a goal by Jordan Auld (Toronto, Ont.) at 12:58 of the third. The Reps led 1-0 after the first on James Ryan’s goal. The Richmond Hill, Ont. native was named Mississauga’s player of the game.

Antoine-Girouard tied the game 1-1 when Marc-Olivier Brouillard (Mont St-Hilaire, Que.) scored early in the second period. Eric Locke (Toronto, Ont.) scored a shorthanded marker later in the period and the Reps led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The Gaulois, spurred on by a pro-Antoine-Girouard crowd, scored twice in a span of one minute 16 seconds in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Kevin Bergeron (Ste. Julie, Que.) and Dominic Beauchemin (Varennes, Que.) scored power play goals.

The Reps started this week with a 4-1 loss to the host Lévis Commandeurs. They then beat Red Deer 5-2, before dropping a 6-4 decision to Antoine-Girouard. At that point, not many people picked Mississauga to be in Sunday’s final. The Reps, though, grew stronger from that point and played their best game of the preliminary round on Friday in a 5-5 tie with Notre Dame. Mississauga needed a point in that game to qualify for the playoffs.

Sunday’s gold medal game, slated for 2:30 p.m. ET, will be shown on TSN and RDS. Check local listings for specific broadcast times.
