2011 TELUS Cup

London Jr. Knights 3 - St. John's Privateers 5

PRIVATEERS USE THIRD-PERIOD PUSH TO EARN FIRST WIN

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – Liam Hynes and Ryan Power scored in the first 2:27 of the third period to break open a 2-2 tie as the St. John's Privateers earned their first win of the 2011 TELUS Cup with a 5-3 victory over the London Jr. Knights on Tuesday night.

Justin O'Reilly, captain Marcus Power and Danny Wicks also scored for the Privateers (1-1), who trailed2-1 after the first period before rattling off three unanswered goals to take the lead for good.

One night after falling behind the Halifax Titans 3-0 before finally getting on the board, the tournament hosts scored first when O'Reilly batted a rebound past London goaltender Justin Tugwell just shy of the midway mark of the first period.

But the final 10 minutes of the opening frame belonged to the Jr. Knights (0-2), who got goals from Connor Hogg and Conor Carson to take a 2-1 advantage to the dressing room.
The Privateers' power play, which accounted for four of the team's five goals, tied the game 6:36 into the second period off the stick of Marcus Power – the only goal of a second period that saw St. John's outshoot the Central Region champions 13-7.

With St. John's holding the man advantage to start the third period, Hynes' unassisted effort gave thePrivateers their first lead since 1-0, and Ryan Power's blast from the point less than two minutes later on another power play made it 4-2.

Stuart King got the Jr. Knights to within one at 4-3 with a power play goal of his own, but Wicks put the game out of reach with 3:53 to go, finishing off a gorgeous give-and-go with Ryan Power, tipping the puck past Tugwell

The Privateers will look to make it two straight wins when they face the tournament's last remaining unbeaten team, the Vancouver North West Giants, on Wednesday night (7 p.m. NT), while the Jr. Knights face Winnipeg in the 3:30 p.m. NT game.
