2010 TELUS Cup

Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard  6 -  Red Deer Optimist Rebels  1

FANTASTIC FINAL PERIOD GIVES GAULOIS VICTORY

LÉVIS, QUE. – Three goals in three minutes 23 seconds to start the third period was the difference.

The Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard earned a 6-1 win over the Red Deer Optimist Rebels on Thursday at the 2010 TELUS Cup, thanks to a five-goal outburst in the final period. The teams were tied 1-1 after 40 minutes. But then the wheels fell off for the Rebels.

First, Marc-Olivier Brouillard (Mont St-Hilaire, Que.) scored 1:47 into the third. Sixty-seven seconds later, Thomas Gobeil (Boucherville, Que.) got his first of the tournament and, just 29 seconds after that, Cédric Leblanc (Marieville, Que.) scored to make it 4-1. The Gaulois turned it up in the third, despite being without their top scorer, Kevin Bergeron, who missed the entire game due to injury.

The Gaulois were once again led by courageous captain Alexandre Lemieux (Beloeil, Que.), who has been banged up this week from several blocked shots and hits. Lemieux battled hard throughout the game, as he has done all week, and scored two goals, including the first of the game. Olivier Jodoin (Otterburn Park, Que.) added a single for the winners.

Red Deer’s lone goal was scored by Brett Printz (Red Deer, Alta.) in the second period.

Antoine-Girouard improved to 2-0-2 with the win, while Red Deer dropped to 1-3. The Rebels have one game remaining – a Friday contest against St. John’s – and will need to win if it hopes to continue playing on the weekend.

The Gaulois conclude the round-robin on Friday versus the host Lévis Commandeurs.
