The Drive for Five is complete – the Vernon Vipers are Canada’s first five-time national Junior A champions after Braden Pimm and Kyle Bigos scored goals in a victory over the Broncos. Vernon's title pushed it past Prince Albert and into top spot in all-time national championships, joining titles in 1990, 1991, 1996 and 1999.

Overtime was all Mathieu LaRochelle as the Humboldt netminder made 11 saves, many of them spectacular, leading the Broncos to the RBC Cup final and earning Friday’s Star of the Day.

Shawn Hunter scored the biggest goal of his career with 2.3 seconds left in overtime as the Broncos earned a chance to defend their national title with a thrilling win over the Grizzlies.

Bryce Kakoske racked up four points – two goals and two assists – as the Vipers advanced to the national championship game for the first time in 10 years with a victory over the Voyageurs.

 

SUMMERSIDE 5 - HUMBOLDT 0 | ROUND ROBIN | THU. MAY 7
Mike MacIsaac and Brad Smith had three points apiece as the Capitals ensured they leave Vancouver Island with at least one victory after blanking the defending national champions.

VERNON 8 - KINGSTON 5 | ROUND ROBIN | THU. MAY 7
Eight different players scored goals and 13 had at least a single point as the Vipers erased a 5-3 deficit and wrapped up first place in the round robin with an offensively-charged victory.

SUMMERSIDE 3 - VICTORIA 6 | ROUND ROBIN | WED. MAY 6
Justin Courtnall scored twice and added an assist and Jonathan Milhouse had a goal and two helpers as the Grizzlies wrapped up a semifinal berth with a victory over the winless Capitals.

KINGSTON 2 - HUMBOLDT 5 | ROUND ROBIN | WED. MAY 6
Shawn Hunter scored once and set up another in the third period to give the Broncos some insurance as they rebounded from their blowout loss to Vernon by topping the Voyageurs.

Cole Ikkala was the overtime hero, scoring 7:13 into the extra frame as the Vipers stayed undefeated with a win over the Grizzlies. Vernon scored twice in the third period to tie the game.

The Vipers jumped out to a four-goal second period lead as they came out on top in the battle of pre-tournament favourites. Rob Short pitched in with a goal and two assists in the win.

KINGSTON 7 - SUMMERSIDE 5 | ROUND ROBIN | MON. MAY 4
The Voyageurs and Capitals combined for nine goals in the final 20 minutes as Kingston survived a wild third period to post its first victory. Mike Farrell had a hat trick to lead the offence.

VICTORIA 5 – KINGSTON 0 | ROUND ROBIN | SUN. MAY 3
Jeff Forsythe scored twice and added an assist as the Grizzlies rebounded from their heartbreaking opening loss by blanking the Voyageurs. Anthony Grieco had 21 saves for the shutout.

VERNON 4 – SUMMERSIDE 2 | ROUND ROBIN | SUN. MAY 3
Braden Pimm’s goal just 13 seconds after the opening face-off set the tone as the Vipers opened their quest for a fifth National Junior A Championship with a victory over the Capitals.

HUMBOLDT 2 – VICTORIA 1 | ROUND ROBIN | SAT. MAY 2
Scott Schroeder scored shorthanded with 1.1 seconds left on the clock as the defending national champions opened the 2009 RBC Cup with an unlikely victory over the host Grizzlies.

RBC SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS NAMED; KEVIN ROSS WINS NATIONAL AWARD
Kevin Ross of the BCHL’s Alberni Valley Bulldogs has been named the winner of the $5,000 national RBC Junior A Scholarship and will receive his award at the 2009 RBC Cup. » more
