Students from the Hockey Canada Skills Academy at Saint-Dominique-Savio Catholic School got involved in the community and continued to carve their path to success

Student-athletes from the Hockey Canada Skills Academy at Saint-Dominique-Savio Catholic School, part of the Providence Catholic School Board, are in their second year of the program. Classes take place from 7:30-8:20 a.m. and student-athletes are very satisfied with the new format.

Owen Prior, a Grade 8 student who plays for the Grey-Bruce Highlanders (Minor Bantam AAA) this season, says the morning classes enable him to start the day off on the right foot and instill in him the discipline required to monitor his off-ice lifestyle (e.g. bedtime). As for Tara Meikle, a top forward with the Chatsworth Rebels, she says she is never too tired and is always looking to improve.

In addition, the student-athletes are involved in the community, including some who volunteered to coach a Hockey Canada Skills Academy session during a PD day. Not only did they share their expertise, they also accumulated community hours towards their diploma.

Members of the HCSA at Saint-Dominique-Savio also lent a hand with the logistics at the Silverstick Tournament in Owen Sound, where the organizing committee was very grateful for their help.

Students also had a career education course assignment asking them to choose a career or profession required to hold a tournament in a community. All academic paths were represented, and the students used the resources found in the Drill Hub app, watching games before preparing a scouting report on both teams involved.
