U.S. PULLS AWAY FOR PRE-TOURNAMENT WIN OVER RED

JASON LA ROSE

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Matthew Boldy, Judd Caulfield and Cole Caufield had two goals apiece, and the United States scored eight unanswered goals in the final 40 minutes Thursday to score a 9-1 pre-tournament win over Canada Red ahead of the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

John Beecher, Jack Hughes and Danny Weight had the other goals for the Americans, who outshot Red 46-24.
Hughes led the way offensively, finishing with a goal and four assists.

Peyton Krebs was the lone goal-scorer for the Canadians.

Boldy got the scoring started eight minutes into the first period, before Krebs broke down the left wing and snapped a quick shot past U.S. netminder Spencer Knight to send the game to the intermission tied 1-1.

The floodgates opened early in the second; Boldy poked in his second of the game at 3:49, Caulfield tucked in the 3-1 goal at 10:36 and Caufield added one more before the end of the middle stanza, making it a three-goal game after 40 minutes.

Beecher rifled in the fifth U.S. goal just 27 seconds into the third period before four more in a span of 8:21 – including the second of the game for Caulfield and Caufield – finished the scoring.

The Americans open their schedule Sunday night (7 p.m. MT) against the Czech Republic in Dawson Creek, while Canada Red will see its first action against Finland in the opener in Fort St. John (2:30 p.m. MT).
