GOALTENDERS HELP RED TO FIRST WIN AT U17 CAMP

JASON LA ROSE

CALGARY, Alta. – Trent Miner (Souris, Man./Brandon, MMAAAHL) and Byron Fancy (Claresholm, Alta./Lethbridge, AMHL) combined for 31 saves, backstopping Red to a 4-1 win over White to finish play Thursday at Canada’s national under-17 development camp.

Miner got the start and was perfect on the 17 shots directed his way before giving way midway through the second period to Fancy, who turned aside 13 of the 14 shots he faced.

Red gave Miner an early lead to work with, scoring just 1:23 in; Brayden Tracey (Calgary, Alta./Calgary Northstars, AMHL) parked himself at the top of the crease and redirected a Mitchell Brown (Enderby, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) feed through White goaltender Mack Guzda (Nashville, Tenn./Detroit Honeybaked, USU16) to make it 1-0.

Ethan Browne (Sherwood Park, Alta./Sherwood Park, AMHL) doubled the lead with just over three minutes to go in the opening frame, quickly pulling the puck around a sprawled-out Guzda to send Red to the intermission up by a pair.

After combining for 26 shots in a busy first period, the teams continued to fire away in the second, with Red holding a narrow 10-9 advantage in the middle frame.

Nick Wong (Orton, Ont./Mississauga Senators, GTHL) pushed the lead to three at 11:52 of the second, gathering in a centering pass from Browne before quickly snapping a shot past the glove of Taylor Gauthier (Calgary, Alta./Calgary Buffaloes, AMHL), who had replaced Guzda in the White goal just minutes earlier.

White finally solved Fancy with less than seven minutes go – Jacob Gaucher (Saint-Hubert, Que./Collège Antoine-Girouard, LHMAAAQ) finished a tic-tac-toe set-up on the power play – but Mathieu Bizier (Lévis, Que./Lévis, LHMAAAQ) capped the scoring into an empty net with 53 seconds to go.

Red finished with a 36-32 edge in shots on goal.
