2008 National U18 Club Championship

Cole Harbour McCains  1 -  Ottawa Valley Titans  1

The goaltenders were the story on Tuesday night at the Nick Smith Centre after the host Ottawa Valley Titans and Cole Harbour McCains skated to a 1-1 tie at the 2008 TELUS Cup.

Philip Wright turned aside 22 shots for the McCains while Justin Gilbert stopped 20 for the Titans as both teams stayed winless, with just a single point (0-1-1) from their first two games.

After dominating much of the opening 20 minutes – they outshot the McCains 9-5 – Ottawa Valley opened the scoring at 11:16 as Brent Bisdee tipped a centering pass from Devon Rice over the shoulder of Wright.

The goal came just moments after the McCains were robbed on their best chance of the opening period, as a Titans defender swept the puck off the goal line, denying Cole Harbour the all-important first goal.

The Ottawa Valley defense took over in the second period and the Titans took a one-goal lead into the final frame, although the McCains held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal in period two.

Unfortunately for the tournament hosts, they were unable to keep Cole Harbour at bay for the final 20 minutes, as Stephen MacAulay converted on a two-on-one with Jordan Burke on a McCain powerplay, pulling the Atlantic Region champions even at the 8:07 mark.

The final eight minutes went much as the first 42 did, with the goaltenders standing tall, making the saves when they were needed.

The Titans had a glorious opportunity to win the game in the dying minutes, spending the last 2:13 on the powerplay, but could not beat Wright.

Rice took home player of the game honours for the Titans, while McAulay did the same for the McCains, who both need to string together wins if they hope to play on the weekend for a chance at the national championship.

The Titans will face Calgary in a battle of teams looking for their first win, with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. ET, while the McCains will take on the unbeaten Winnipeg Thrashers at 4:00 p.m. ET.
