2010-11 National Women's Under-22 Team

Game Summary

Germany 0 - Canada 9

SAULNIER, PREVOST SCORE TWO EACH AS CANADA HIT GERMANY WITH 90 SHOTS TO WIN 9-0 AT MLP CUP

KREUZLINGEN, Switzerland – Jillian Saulnier and Carolyne Prevost each scored twice as Canada's under-22 women's hockey team hammered Germany 9-0 at the MLP Cup on Thursday.

Natalie Spooner, Vicki Bendus, Isabel Menard, Mallory Deluce and Stefanie McKeough each scored for Canada (2-0), which has 14 goals through two games at the tournament.

Canada scorched German goaltender Jennifer Harss, who was forced to make a staggering 81 saves, according to the official scoresheet.

“Did you say 90 shots?” asked Canadian head coach Jim Fetter when told of the stat.

Fetter said his staff had the shot count around 50, though the International Ice Hockey Federation's official scoring showed 90 shots.

“It's just one of those things we've been talking about since day one, since we got here,” he said. “Attacking the net, putting everything to the net and going to the net hard. And I think today we did a great job.”

Roxanne Douville got the win in the Canadian net.

The Canadians, the defending champions in the six-country tournament, face Russia in the semifinal Friday.

After Canada was upset in a shock 5-3 loss to Russia in the gold-medal final of the world junior championship Wednesday, Fetter said he hoped to use that game as a motivation for his own team.

“Yeah, without a doubt we talked about that. You know, whether it's fortunate or unfortunate, part of the tournament is you only get one shot at it,” said Fetter.

“You've got to make sure you can bring your best and are able to bring your best every game, and I think that goes along with being able to prepare yourself and take care of your body throughout the whole tournament.”
