2009-10 National Women's Under-22 Team

Game Summary

White 2 - Sweden 3 (Shootout)

SHORTHANDED GOALS HELP SWEDEN TO SHOOTOUT WIN OVER WHITE

CALGARY, Alta. – It seems the second time is the charm for Sweden at the National Women’s Under-22 Team selection camp.

Twenty-four hours after getting revenge on Canada Red for an earlier loss the Swedes did the same to Canada White on Thursday night, scoring a pair of shorthanded goals in the third period before earning a 3-2 shootout win.

White had won the earlier meeting between the two teams, getting a 4-0 victory on Monday night.

For 52 minutes on Thursday, it appeared the Swedish offence would once again be snakebitten against White, as they could not beat netminder Hillary Pattenden (Surrey, B.C./Mercyhurst College, CHA), who made 14 saves through two periods, and 20 overall.

But with Swedish captain Erika Holst off for body-checking, the offence roared to life at the most unlikely time, getting a pair of goals on the same penalty kill just 74 seconds apart.

First it was Jenni Assherholt backhanding a puck through the five-hole of Pattenden on a 2-on-1 before Danijela Rundqvist fought off the backcheck of White defenceman Saige Pacholok (Edmonton, Alta./Edmonton, WWHL) and slid Sweden’s second goal around the White goaltender.

Undaunted, White pulled even with 3:04 to go on another power play, as Alley Bero (Cornwall, Ont./St. Lawrence University, ECAC) batted home the rebound from an Annie Guay (Rouyn-Noranda, Que./Montreal, CWHL) point shot.

After a scoreless overtime and shootout goals from Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Ohio State University, WCHA) and Anna Borgqvist it was Holst who got the winner, snapping a shot over the glove of Pattenden.

Spooner had White’s other goal, beating Swedish netminder Sara Grahn after a scramble in front of the net midway through the second period.

White, which suffered its first loss, wraps up camp on Friday afternoon against Canada Red (12:30 p.m. MT), while Sweden will prepare for its game against Canada’s National Women’s Team on Saturday night (7 p.m. MT).
