CANADA OPENS WORLD WOMEN’S UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIP BY WHIPPING SWITZERLAND STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A tentative start settled into a strong finish for Canada in its first game at the2011 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship. Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man.) and Rebecca Kohler (St. Thomas, Ont.) each had two goals and an assistwhile Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) scored once and set-up two others in a 9-1 romp over Switzerland onSaturday. The Canadians led 2-0 after the first period and 5-1 through 40 minutes. But their game really picked upto another level in the third period, when they scored four times and completely dominated play. "The third period was definitely our best, we got working together as a team as the game went on and wedefinitely put the pressure to them as the score showed,'' said Mercer. "Going forward, this game is going togive us a lot of momentum and the confidence we need to continue to be successful throughout thetournament.'' Katy Josephs (Calgary, Alta.), Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ont.), Shelby Bram (Ste. Anne, Man.) and EmilyFulton (Stratford, Ont.) also scored for Canada, the tournament's defending champions. Amanda Makela (Thunder Bay, Ont.) made 24 saves in goal, 11 of them during the first period when herteammates were still trying to find their legs. "I thought we started the game quite nervous and it took us some time to settle down, but I thought oncewe did that we played really well, worked really hard, found the back of the net, which is always nice,''said head coach Sarah Hodges. "We controlled the play most of the game, but we gave up some scoring opportunities for sure. Ourgoaltender played well. The scoring chances we gave up were on turnovers, so I thought we were a little bittight, and some of that will work itself out as the tournament goes on." Phoebe Staenz scored the lone goal for Switzerland, while goaltender Sandra Heim made 50 saves. The United States will be the primary challenger for Canada and opened with an 11-0 whipping of the CzechRepublic. The majority of players on the Canadian team faced the U.S. in an exhibition series last August in LakePlacid, N.Y., which the Americans swept. Mercer felt the Canadians played the type of game that will lead to success down the road. "I thought we really supported each other well, won a lot of battles digging hard in the corners, that'swhat our coaches and other players on our team like to see," she said. "It gets everyone pumped up when we'reworking hard." |
