Leland Irving (Swan Hills, AB/Everett, WHL) and Carey Price (Anahim Lake, BC/Tri-City, WHL) combined to stop 38 of 42 shots to help the CIS All-Stars beat Team Canada 5-4 on Thursday night in an exhibition game in Calgary.

Price and Irving, who are two of four goaltenders battling for two spots on Canada’s National Junior Team, played for the CIS All-Stars, a team made up of players from the University of Calgary Dinos and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Steve Mason (Oakville, ON/London, OHL) and Jonathan Bernier (Laval, QC/Lewiston, QMJHL) split time in net for Team Canada.

CIS led 4-2 after two periods but Team Canada made a charge in the third. Seventeen seconds in, Brad Marchand (Hammonds Plains, NS/Val d’Or, QMJHL) scored, with the assists going to Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, ON/Michigan, CCHA) and Sam Gagner (Oakville, ON/London, OHL). At 5:14, CIS made it 5-3 on a goal by Colin McRae (Dinos), a former member of the Tri-City Americans.

Canada cut the deficit to one when Bryan Little (Cambridge, ON/Barrie, OHL) scored on a pretty solo effort.

Canada’s other goals were scored by Marc Staal (Thunder Bay, ON/Sudbury, OHL) and Daniel Bertram (Calgary, AB/Boston College, Hockey East). Aaron Richards, a member of the Dinos who is a former Kamloops Blazer, scored twice to lead the CIS All-Stars.

Canada outshot CIS 42-23.

On Friday morning, Canada will announce its final roster of 22 players. The World Junior Championship begins December 26th in Leksand and Mora Sweden.
