Ben Maxwell’s goal at 15:50 of the second period stood as the game-winner as Team Red hung on for a 3-2 victory over Team White in the first intersquad game at the National Junior Team Selection Camp in Calgary on Tuesday.

Maxwell roofed a snap shot past Team White goaltender Trevor Cann after taking a pass from Kenndal McArdle. The goal made it 3-1 for Team White.

The crowd at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena was treated to a fast-paced, competitive game.

Team White opened the scoring early, when Steve Downie scored at the 25-second mark of the first. Downie’s goal came after linemate John Tavares fired the puck in the Team Red zone. Downie found the puck and lifted it past Team Red’s Carey Price.

Team Red tied the game when Andrew Cogliano fed a pass to Mathieu Perreault, who slid the puck past Team White’s starting goaltender Leland Irving at 1:23 of the second. At 5:37, Kristopher Letang scored the prettiest goal of the night when he skated over the blueline and snapped a rocket at the top corner to give Team Red a 2-1 lead.

Midway through the second period, Cann replaced Irving in the Team White net, and Jonathan Bernier replaced Carey Price for Team Red.

Tom Pyatt scored a power-play goal for Team White at 12:45 of the third period to make things interesting but Team Red held on.

The teams meet again Wednesday night, 6 o’clock, at Father David Bauer Arena. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door two hours prior to game time.

On Thursday, Team Canada will face the CIS All-Stars at 5 p.m., also at Father David Bauer Arena.
