2012 TELUS Cup

Leduc Oil Kings 2 - Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin 8

FOUR POINTS EACH FOR STORTO AND DAUPHIN, PHÉNIX ADVANCE TO TELUS CUP FINAL

LEDUC, Alta. – David Storto scored twice and added two assists and Laurent Dauphin had a goal and three helpers as the Phenix du Collège Esther-Blondin advanced to the gold medal game at the 2012 TELUS Cup with an 8-2 win over the Leduc Oil Kings on Saturday night.

The Phénix will face the Red Deer Rebels in Sunday’s final (2:30 p.m. MT, TSN), while the Oil Kings will meet the Saskatoon Contacts for the bronze medal in Sunday morning’s third-place game (10:30 a.m. MT).

Vincent Deslauriers also had a pair of goals and David Bergeron, Daniel Audette and Kevin Deslauriers added singles as Collège Esther-Blondin became the first Quebec team since Gatineau in 2005 to reach the gold medal game, and will try and become the first since Ste-Foy in 2001 to win the national championship.

Up 3-1 after two periods, the Phénix scored five times on 14 shots in the final 20 minutes to pull away and clinch a gold medal game berth in its tournament debut. Overall, Collège Esther-Blondin was outshot 33-31 by Leduc.

Jody Sick and Robert Cain scored the goals for the Oil Kings, who put the pressure on the Phénix in the first two periods, holding a 28-17 advantage in shots on goal, but found themselves down by a pair of goals.

The Oil Kings are the first Alberta host team not to play in the gold medal game at Canada’s National Midget Championship. The Calgary Spurs won the 1976 Wrigley Cup on home ice, as did the Calgary Northstars at the 1991 Air Canada Cup, while Red Deer took home silver from the 2007 TELUS Cup.
