2012 TELUS Cup

Leduc Oil Kings 6 - Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves 3

DAWES, PANKEWICZ HAVE FOUR POINTS EACH, OIL KINGS STAY PERFECT AT TELUS CUP

LEDUC, Alta. – Hayden Dawes scored twice and added two assists and Kord Pankewicz had a goal and three helpers as the Leduc Oil Kings stayed perfect at the 2012 TELUS Cup with a 6-3 win over the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves on Tuesday night.

The Oil Kings are the first host team to open the National Midget Championship with consecutive wins since the Red Deer Rebels in 2007, the last time an Alberta team hosted the tournament.

Carson Powlik, Preston Eshenko and Jody Sick also scored for Leduc (2-0), which chased Sudbury starter Maxim Veilleux after Sick’s goal made it 5-0 Oil Kings just 5:45 into the second period. Powlik added two assists to his goal and Leduc netminder Kevin Verhoeff stopped 28 of 31 shots in his tournament debut.

Connor Burgess, Michael Laidley and Brandon Langella scored in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the third period for Sudbury (0-2), cutting a five-goal deficit to two, but that would be as close as the Central Region champions would get.

Andrew Lefebvre kept Sudbury within striking distance in his 34 minutes of work between the pipes, making 24 saves and allowing only Dawes’ second goal of the game with just 4:25 to go.

The Wolves will be in tough if they hope to repeat their 2008 national championship performance; in the last 20 years only one team, the 2004 Brandon Wheat Kings, opened the tournament with consecutive losses before going on to win the gold medal.

An all-Alberta match-up awaits Leduc next, as it faces Red Deer on Wednesday night (7:30 p.m. MT), while Sudbury tries again to find the win column when it takes on Saskatoon in an afternoon contest (4 p.m. MT).
