REINHART, KERFOOT EXPLODE FOR 16 POINTS AS GIANTS OPEN WITH WIN

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Sam Reinhart scored a hat trick and added six assists, finishing with a remarkable ninepoints, as the Vancouver North West Giants opened the 2011 TELUS Cup with a 12-5 rout of the WinnipegThrashers on Monday afternoon.

Alex Kerfoot added two goals and five assists and Jackson Houck had a hat trick of his own as Vancouver’stop line combined for 19 points, helping the Giants become the first team since Magog in 2000 to score adozen goals in a game at the National Midget Championship.

The 17 total goals tied the all-time record for combined goals in a game, set in Magog’s 14-3 win overRichmond Hill at the 2000 tournament.

The game got off to a wild start, as Joel Issigonis, Scott Patterson, Houck and Reinhart scored forVancouver, while Tyler Kauk replied for Winnipeg, all within the first 10 minutes. Kerfoot and Houck addedgoals for the Giants before the end of the opening period to send the Pacific Region champions to thedressing room with a 6-2 lead.

Reinhart and Kerfoot each had five points in the first 20 minutes.

The Thrashers cut into the lead by a single goal in the second period and were down 8-5 after two, butfour unanswered goals by the Giants in the final frame rounded out the scoring.

In addition to the scoring exploits of the top line, Dexter Dancs and Giants captain Mitch Fyffe also puttheir names on the scoresheet, helping make Vancouver just the seventh team in the tournament’s 33-yearhistory to score at least 12 goals.

The Giants will look continue the offensive momentum when they take on the Halifax Titans on Tuesdayafternoon (3:30 p.m. NT), while the Thrashers will look to rebound against the Lions du Lac St-Louis in theday’s early game (noon NT).
