Prague, Czech Republic – Team Canada captured the gold medal at the 2004 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship after a 5-3 win over Sweden on Sunday in Prague, Czech Republic. With the win, Canada records back-to-back titles for the first time since 1958-59.

TEAM CANADA – RALLIES AGAIN

PRAGUE – Canada’s colors are red and white and gold, World Hockey Championship gold that is.

Canada rallied from a two-goal deficit twice against Sweden to beat them 5-3 in the gold medal game of the world tournament Sunday.

Canada (7-1-1), captured back-to-back world championships for the first time since the Whitby Dunlops (1958) and Belleville McFarlands (1959) did it nearly half a century ago. It’s also Canada’s 23rd world title, tying the Soviet Union/Russia for the most world championships ever. » more

TEAM CANADA BEATS SLOVAKIA 2-1 IN SEMI-FINAL AND ADVANCE TO GOLD MEDAL GAME ON SUNDAY AT 2004 IIHF MEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN PRAGUE

PRAGUE – Team Canada advanced to the gold medal game of the 2004 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship after beating Slovakia 2-1 on Saturday. Canada will once again play Sweden in the gold medal game, after beating them in last year’s event in overtime in Finland.

If Canada wins the gold medal, 18-year-old Patrice Bergeron will become the youngest player ever to capture an IIHF Championship wearing the Maple Leaf. The previous youngest Canadian was Paul Kariya in 1994 at age 19.

If Ryan Smyth gets a point in Sunday's gold medal game, he will tie Paul Kariya for third place on the all-time list of Canadian scorers at the IIHF World Championships. Smyth is currently tied for fourth with Brian Bellows at 27 points.

CANADA IS GOING FOR GOLD AGAIN!

Shawn Horcoff of the Edmonton Oilers scored a goal 6:10 into the third period and defending champion Canada edged Slovakia 2-1 in a semifinal of the men's world hockey championship Saturday.

Daniel Briere of the Buffalo Sabres also scored for Canada, who will face the winner of Saturday's later semifinal between Sweden and the U.S. in Sunday's gold medal game.

CANADA IS AWARDED THE 2008 IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The IIHF Congress in Prague, Czech Republic, today officially allocated the 2008 IIHF World Championship to Canada. Quebec City and Halifax did not face any competition as the German and Swedish delegations withdrew their bids for the 2008 IIHF World Championship already on Thursday and fully acknowledged their support for Canada's bid.

IIHF President René Fasel made the historic announcement at 15.58 CET. It marks the first time that the men’s IIHF World Championship will be staged in Canada. 2008 will also mark the 100-year anniversary of the International Ice Hockey Federation and the championship will be part of the IIHF’s centennial celebration.
