CALGARY, Alta. – The best sledge hockey players from across the country will converge on Calgary this weekend for Canada’s National Sledge Team training camp, which runs from Jan. 11-17 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park.

The 19 players attending camp include two goaltenders, six defencemen and 11 forwards; 15 players coming to Calgary helped Canada win a bronze medal at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, last March.

The players received invitations to training camp following Canada’s National Sledge Team selection camp, which was held from Nov. 19-24 at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto, Ont.

From training camp, the roster will be trimmed down by head coach Ken Babey, assistant coaches Ron Choules and Hervé Lord, and Hockey Canada’s high performance department, and the selected players will represent Canada at the 2015 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, scheduled for Feb. 1-7 at the Leduc Recreation Centre in Leduc, Alta.

During the 2014-15 season, Canada will compete at the 2015 World Sledge Hockey Challenge and 2015 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, scheduled for April 24-May 2 in Buffalo, N.Y.

“This camp is a big step towards Leduc, and eventually Buffalo, for the sledge hockey program,” said Shawn Bullock, senior manager of hockey operations and men’s national teams with Hockey Canada. “We’re excited to get these 19 players into Calgary, work with them both on and off the ice, and continue to move forward towards a pair of gold medals this season.”

The players will be on the ice for five days in Calgary, with daily practices scheduled. The camp also includes a number of off-ice presentations, focused on physical performance, mental performance and fitness.

Canada is the defending champion at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge, having beat the United States 3-1 in the gold medal game in Toronto last December, and at the IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, winning its third world title with a 1-0 victory over the U.S. at the 2013 tournament in Goyang, South Korea.
