THIRD PERIOD OUTBURST LEADS CANADA TO WIN
LEDUC, Alta. – Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont.), Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask.) and Caroline
Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) scored third-period goals as Canada’s National Women’s Team survived a scare from
the Leduc Oil Kings to post a 7-5 win on Friday night.
Six players contributed goals to help Canada improve its Midget Series record to 8-3 and earn its second
win in as many nights.
After Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont.) opened the scoring with a rocket past Oil Kings goaltender Jordon
Cooke at the 6:50 mark, it took Agosta just over a minute to put Canada up 2-0 at 8:03, and Jennifer
Botterill (Winnipeg, Man.) continued the trend with a goal of her own twelve seconds later, making it
3-0.
But the three-goal deficit was not too much for the Oil Kings to overcome, as the AMHL side narrowed the
gap to 3-2 on goals from James Dobni and Luc Recknagle before the intermission.
Leduc continued its comeback early in the second, with Ryley Bennefield evening the playing field to 3-3
just a minute into the period. Delaney Collins (Pilot Mound, Man.) and Austin Wilson traded goals midway
through the middle frame, sending the game to the second intermission tied 4-4.
But Leduc’s luck ran out in the final period, with Agosta scoring her second of the night on a pretty pass
from Wickenheiser before the Canadian captain scored one of her own to double the lead to 6-4.
The Oil Kings made one last push on Dobni’s second of the night, but Ouellette sealed the deal for Canada
in the dying seconds to round out the scoring.
Canada’s National Women’s Team continues it’s the NWT Midget Series with two games in Calgary next week,
the first against the Calgary Northstars on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. MT) and then versus the Calgary Buffaloes on
Thursday (7:30 p.m. MT). Both of those games can be seen live via webcast at hockeycanada.fasthockey.com.
