MOSCOW – Canada wins the gold medal at the 2007 IIHF World Championship with a 4-2 win over Finland on Sunday evening. Canada finishes this year’s event with a perfect 9-0 record. Led by team captain Shane Doan, Canada’s victory today marks the third goal medal victory for Canada at
the past five World Championships (gold in 2007, 20). Canada also won a silver medal in 2005 in
Austria, while finishing 4th in 2006. Finland got on the board with just under nine minutes remaining the in the game, when Petri Kontiola scored to make the game 3-1. Finland kept the pressure on, when Antti Miettinen scored at 17:44 make it a one goal game, 3-2. Canada’s Rick Nash, the MVP of this year’s championship and Canada’s player of the game in today’s game,
scored a highlight reel-goal on a breakaway with 1:06 remaining in the game to give Canada a 4-2 lead and to
secure the gold medal victory for Canada.
