2008-09 National Men's Team

Game Summary

Germany 0 - Canada 3

CANADA WINS 2008 DEUTSCHLAND CUP

MANNHEIM, GERMANY – Norm Milley, Scott King and Pascal Trépanier scored the goals and Fred Brathwaite made 36 saves for the shutout as Canada’s National Men’s Team claimed the 2008 Deutschland Cup with a 3-0 win over Germany.

The tournament title is the fourth for Canada, joining championships won in 2000, 2002 and 2005.

Canada went a perfect 3-0 in the round-robin tournament, allowing only two goals – zero in the final 143:27. Jamie Storr blanked Switzerland on Saturday before Brathwaite’s shutout performance to clinch the title.

Miley got the Canadians on the board just shy of the midway point of the opening period, converting a set up from Jamie Wright to get the offence rolling.

King made it 2-0 late in the second period, giving Canada the insurance it would need as Brathwaite and the defence shut down the Germans from there.

Germany outshot the Canadians 36-22 overall, but Brathwaite made 12 saves in each period, holding the tournament hosts at bay until Canada could convert its opportunities.

Trépanier rounded out the scoring 13 minutes into the third period, putting the cap on the victory in front of a capacity crowd of 8,525 at SAP Arena.

Richie Regehr and Justin Papineau finished as co-leaders in scoring – not only for the Canadians, but in the tournament – with four points each.

Brathwaite and Storr combined to stop 73 of 75 shots in Canada’s three games – a remarkable .973 save percentage.

Canada’s team at the 2008 Deutschland Cup is made up of Canadian players playing professionally in Germany, as well as one from the Austrian league.

The National Men’s Team sees action next in late December, when a new group of players will look to defend Canada’s title at the 2008 Spengler Cup, set for December 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland.

The roster for the 2008 Spengler Cup will be announced in late November/early December.
