PIPER’S HAT TRICK LIFTS CHIEFS PAST WHITECAPS Charlottetown, PEI – Cherie Piper (Markham, ON) scored three goals, including an important insurance marker late in the third, to lead the Mississauga Chiefs to a 5-3 win over the Minnesota Whitecaps in the first semi-final of the club championship pool at the Esso Women’s Nationals. Piper scored twice in the first period, as Mississauga jumped out to a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. Rebecca Davies (Toronto, ON) scored Missisauga’s other goal in the first, with Kristin King replying for Minnesota. The Whitecaps tied up with two goals in the first seven minutes of the second, as Jenny Potter (Edina, MN) and Angela Ruggiero (Harper Woods, MI) scored. The Chiefs re-took the lead at 15:28 as Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB) scored the eventual game-winner. Piper’s insurance goal came on a breakaway at 17:45 of the third, as she took the puck from forehand to backhand and slid it past Minnesota’s Megan Van Beusekom (Loretto, MN).
