COLLINS’ GOAL GIVES MANITOBA WIN Charlottetown, PEI – Team Manitoba jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and held on for a 5-4 win over Team New Brunswick on Wednesday at the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals. Bonnie Kroeker (Steinbach, MB/Westman Selects), Shelley Cockerill (Roblin, MB/Bears), and Hailey Clarkson (Winnipeg, MB/Westman Selects) scored in the first 4:19 of the first period and it looked like Manitoba would skate to an easy victory. But New Brunswick’s Emilie Arseneault (Rothesay, NB/Brewster Academy) scored at 13:57 of the first to cut the deficit to two goals. New Brunswick made it 3-2 just a minute into the second period, as Lyse Rossignol (New Maryland, NB/Saint Mary’s, CIS) found the back of the net. It stayed that way until 17:40 of the second, when Devon Fingland (Lundar, MB/Westman Selects) restored Manitoba’s two-goal lead. Manitoba took a 4-2 lead into the third. Two goals by Kim Deschênes (St. Quentin, NB/Team Atlantic) in just over four minutes put New Brunswick into a tie with Manitoba. But only 30 seconds after Deschênes’ second goal, Aimee Collins (Pilot Mount, MB/Westman Selects) scored to give Manitoba a 5-4 lead, a lead the team would not relinquish. Manitoba improved to 1-1, while New Brunswick fell to 1-0-0-1. Manitoba outshot New Brunswick 35-17, including 29-10 over two periods. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
