THUNDER UPSET X-TREME TO CLINCH SPOT IN FINAL Charlottetown, PEI – The Brampton Canadette-Thunder pulled off a major upset at the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals on Friday night. Brampton, which lost 6-4 to the Minnesota Whitecaps on Thursday, beat the Calgary Oval X-Treme 3-2 in a semi-final to earn a berth in Saturday’s gold medal final. It was Calgary’s first loss this season, ending the team’s 25-game winning streak. Vicky Sunohara (Scarborough, ON) scored the game-winning goal at 12:53 of the third period when she blasted a shot past Calgary goaltender Amanda Tapp (Calgary, AB). The Canadette-Thunder players on the ice tackled Sunohara, obviously sensing an upset in the making. Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON) and Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON) also scored for Brampton. Calgary opened the scoring at 4:03 of the second period when Rebecca Russell (Lethbridge, NL) beat Cindy Eadie (Brantford, ON). Meagan Walton (Calgary, AB) got Calgary’s other goal at 8:59 of the third, which made it 2-2 at the time. Brampton will now play the Mississauga Chiefs in Saturday’s final. Calgary will meet Minnesota in the third-place game. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
