RELEGATION GAME: Host Team Nova Scotia continued their strong play of Saturday morning and handed BC their sixth straight loss defeating their western rivals 3-2. Nova Scotia opened the scoring at 7:21 of the 1st on a goal by Kori Chevrier. BC evened the game at one on a Melanie Jue’s first goal of the tournament. Nova Scotia then regained the lead on Chevrier’s second goal of the game and took a 2-1 lead into the third. Jue replied once again with her second of the game for BC early in the third tying things up at two. Then with a little over 6 minutes remaining Suzanne Kaye finished off a nice give and go with Elizabeth Chaisson to score what turned out to be the game winner. Jillian McIsaac was sensational in net for Nova Scotia stopping 38 of 40 shots en route to victory. Jue and Chevrier were named their respective team’s player of the game. With the loss, BC, who went -0-6-0 in the tournament will be relegated to Pool B for the 2007 Esso Women’s Nationals, while Nova Scotia’s win secured them birth in Pool A in next year’s event. |
POOL B PLAYOFF ROUND: Manitoba won their third straight game defeating Newfoundland & Labrador 7-1 in what was Manitoba’s last game of the tournament. After opening the tournament with two straight overtime losses, Manitoba bounced back to win their final three games including their two playoff games. Shelley Cockerill led the way for Manitoba registering 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) and Manitoba’s leading scorer Kim Houde chipped in with a 3 point night (1 goal, 2 assists). Kim Walsh scored Newfoundland & Labrador’s lone goal with just 1 minute remaining to spoil the shutout for Manitoba. Cheryl Wiens was named Manitoba’s player of the game while Jillian Green was honoured for Newfoundland & Labrador. Manitoba finishes the tournament with a 3-0-0-2 record, and is the only team of the tournament not to have lost a game in regulation. |
